Homecoming week is back, and this year it is taking inspiration from the city that never sleeps. With the theme “New York, New York,” the Student Government Association and Leadership team have been working to make the week’s events more exciting for everyone.
“We’re trying to do more things while students are here on campus,” Leadership teacher and SGA sponsor Kari Miller said. “We’re also trying to do as many free events as we can, because the dance tickets can be a bit expensive.”
Homecoming week will be full of fun events and activities for everyone to enjoy. While there will be many returning events this year, here are some new events to look forward to.
“The Tonight Show” — Monday, Oct. 27 | 7–8 p.m. | Auditorium | Free
Kicking off the week, “The Tonight Show” brings New York flair to the stage. Hosted by senior class president Mitchell Richmond, the event will feature audience games, guest interviews and plenty of laughter.
“The most exciting part is if we get enough people to get a loud reaction, lots of noise and clapping to give [the event] that good feeling,” Richmond said.
The event’s talk show format was inspired by the real “Tonight Show” starring Jimmy Fallon. The show is filmed in New York City, making it perfect for this year’s theme.
Club Carnival — Tuesday, Oct. 28 | Both Lunches | Courtyard
Back by popular demand, Club Carnival turns lunch into a festival of spirit. Clubs will set up booths and games where students can play, win prizes and learn more about the organizations on campus.
After strong participation in past years, the event returns to showcase the variety of student clubs, and to make it easy for students to get involved. It’s also a chance for clubs to be a part of promoting school spirit.
“Homecoming is such a special time and I want people to have a fun experience at lunch,” director of PR Willow Colton said. “Clubs are a big part of our campus, and [club carnival] is a place for them to showcase what they’re working on.”
A Day in Central Park —Thursday, Oct. 30 | Both Lunches | Courtyard |
Enjoy a bagel with “A Day in Central Park,” an event designed to bring a bit of New York City’s park atmosphere to campus. The courtyard will be set up to feel like a picnic in Central Park, where students can enjoy bagels, different flavors of cream cheese and popcorn. The event provides students with a time to wind down in the middle of the day, eat food with friends, and enjoy the outdoors. The food is first come first serve and students need to bring their Minga ID.
“I want people to get the real feel of New York,” sophomore class president Meredith Schmitt said.
