The class of 2026 has just left campus, and the pressure for the incoming seniors to plan their future has escalated. To help manage this stress, Dr. Andrea Fuhrer is hosting “Know What’s Coming: College Admissions Information for Rising Seniors”, an event primarily for current juniors, though everyone is welcome to sit in. The event takes place on Thursday, May 21, right after school in the media center.
The event is to guide rising seniors in the right direction with the college application process, whether it is information on where to apply or when to retake their SATs to ensure the Class of 2027 is ready to put their best foot forward.
“There is just a lot to keep track of and do,” college and career counselor, Dr. Andrea Fuhrer said. “Students need to know what’s out there and available for them in terms of support.”
During the session, students are encouraged to start their college admission process early, instead of waiting until a month or even weeks before the deadline.
“I really encourage students to start thinking through [and] start writing [their] college essay,” Fuhrer said. “You know, if you’re writing it when you’re not under the gun [of] a deadline that’s two weeks out, it will be more beneficial.”
Even though all are welcome to show, the college information session is more geared towards students who are aiming to get into more competitive colleges, such as UF (the college has an acceptance rate of 24 percent as of 2026), a college out of state, or even Ivy League colleges.
A big part of the process, and one that students are encouraged to start early, is dealing with the cost of college. College tuition skyrockets every year. Although in-state schools are considered a great value, just tuition at a school like UCF will cost $6,300 per year. To help deal with this, a part of the event is to discuss possible scholarship opportunities, whether it is to learn the requirements or even just to see what is available.
“I want to learn more about the requirements for the scholarships and what I have to do to get them,” junior Patrick Ehlers said. “There aren’t any I know of right now, [even though] I know where I want to go.”
Those looking to attend are required to fill out a Google Form to register.
