Craft corner: Up-cycled flower fairy lights

Adorable egg-carton flowers adorn the string of fairy lights. They are a great way to add a touch of whimsy to a room.

Flowers and whimsy make everything better. But getting cute lights that bring a level of fun to decor can be expensive, or plain unsustainable. Instead, making cheap, upcycled and highly accessible flower lights can make any space a cozy one. Made out of a few household items, these lights are super easy and adorable.

Materials:

Paint in desired colors
Paintbrush
Egg carton
Fairy lights
Batteries
Scissors
Water cup
Paper towel
(Optional) hot glue

Instructions:

Step 1

Gather all materials. Then, taking the egg carton, cut out the amount of cups needed: one per light.

Step 2

Scallop the edges of the cups. To do this, cut a petal-like shape on the edge of the cup.

Step 3

Paint each flower your desired color. Ideally, use a couple different colors, and warmer colors are usually best. Pinks, yellows and purples are some of the most common colors for flowers, so I chose to do different shades of each. Let them dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Step 4

Cut a hole through the bottom of the cups. Be careful, though! Cutting the hole too large will cause the flowers to fall off of the lights, and cutting it too small will prevent the lights from fitting through.

Step 5

Push the light through the hole in the flower, with the cup shape around the light. If you want to make it slightly more secure, you can hot glue it, but if not, they should stay on by themselves.

Congrats! You now have an adorable and affordable way to make any room more cozy and whimsical. These are great for book nooks, bedrooms, or simply for hanging in a living room. No matter where, they will light up the room, and the earth too.
