Craft Corner: Finger knit scarves

A cozy scarf to keep the winter chill off of your neck in the wintertime. Best of all, it is easy and affordable to make!

Whether worn to keep the cold wind’s chill off of your neck or to add that necessary bit of spice to a winter outfit, a scarf can be a great thing to have. On the other hand, it can be hard to find one that fits both your style and budget. But what if you could make a customized scarf from common materials and with little expertise? Gone are the need for a crochet hook or knitting needles. Who knows how to use those things anyway? Finger knitting is a simple alternative.

Craft Corner: Finger knit scarf

Step 1

Taking the loose end of the yarn in your right hand, cross the end over the long side, from right to left, creating a loop. Then, pull the long part through the loop you created to secure a slipknot.

Step 2

Facing the left hand toward your face, secure the knot loosely around your pinky. Then, take the yarn and weave it back and forth until you reach the pointer finger. It should be behind the ring, in front of the middle, and behind the pointer. Bring the yarn around the pointer, and go back the opposite way. This should be in front of the pointer, behind the middle, in front of the ring, and behind the pinky. Complete the pattern to end at the pointer once more.

Step 4

Keep in mind it will stretch a bit, but once you have the desired length, there is a specific technique to end it off. There should only be one loop on each finger as you end it off. Starting with the pinky, carry the loop over to the ring finger. Bring the lower loop over like the others before, and then bring the left over loop to the next finger. This should go on until the very last finger. On this last one, take the yarn end, cut it, and thread it through the last loop after taking it off of the pointer finger. Pull the loop tight and tie a knot to really secure it in place.

Step 5

If you want it the width that it is currently, skip this step. If you want it to be thicker, make another following steps 1-4.

Step 6

Lining up the edges, take the loose end of the yarn and “sew” it through the edges. A toothpick or yarn needle can make it easier to bring it through. With a yarn needle, just thread it through the eye, but with a toothpick, tape the end to the body of the toothpick. Then, starting from the right piece, thread it through the front to the back. Bring it from the back to the front through the loops on the left piece, going in a circular motion as you repeat all down the seam to connect the two pieces together. Then, cut off all of those pesky loose ends that are sticking out.

Congratulations! You now have a cozy and stylish scarf. There is nothing like the feeling of making something yourself, especially when it is so cute and affordable. The winter chill will not feel quite so cold anymore!
