If you share this struggle, here is some advice for some issues you may face going into the holidays.
What should I get my significant other for the holidays?
The holiday spirit is full of love, and what better way to show that you care than through gift giving? Although it may be hard coming up with some ideas for your partner, if you know them well, then finding a thoughtful gift should come naturally.
Paying attention to your partner’s interests is important when gift shopping. Favorite snacks, drinks or books are all sincere gifts to get. Making a small basket filled with their favorite things shows how much you care about their interests.
“I would get something that is meaningful to them, and something that you know they would enjoy, or something that you can do together,” freshman Zoe Spencer said.
There are a variety of holiday activities that you can do with your partner, and it makes the gift more meaningful when they involve spending time together. For example, you can build gingerbread houses, paint ornaments or go look at Christmas lights.
What are good gifts for my family members?
Buying gifts every year for birthdays, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day and Christmas is a lot! It is difficult to come up with new, unique ideas that are special to your family members but are not repetitive.
Starting with siblings, you cannot go wrong with a nice pair of shoes they have been wanting or a hoodie from their favorite brand. Spending every day together and knowing your sibling well is an advantage because you are more familiar with their likes and dislikes.
There is also nothing wrong with getting a humorous gift! Sometimes all anyone needs is a good laugh, and the most valuable gift is a smile.
“I would get my brother something that’s an inside joke to us because it shows you really know them,” sophomore Zara Valencia said. “And I would also get him something that he wants to go along with it.”
Parents are more stressful to buy gifts for because they often do not share their wants openly or make a wishlist. However, paying attention to the little things that they may need around the house or something they have been eyeing for some time is a great gift idea. For example, some kitchen utensils for mom and outdoor tools for dad are thoughtful gifts.
What are some thoughtful but cheap gifts?
When there are many people in your life, buying gifts on a budget may be difficult, but it does not make it any less meaningful. There are several gifts that show sincerity, even if they are not expensive.
“I feel like any gift is thoughtful, no matter the cost, even if it’s just a handmade card because people appreciate even the little things,” sophomore Nicole Cui said.
Handmade gifts show the receiver the time and effort that was put into the present and makes it special. Some examples can be a card, bracelet, paper bouquet or even a piece of clothing. Getting creative and making something from scratch shows the same, if not more thoughtfulness than an expensive gift.
However, if you were looking to buy something, but still on the cheaper side, then there are many options that send the same message. With the cold weather coming up, getting a hoodie, sweater or fuzzy socks all make for a great gift, and many of these can be found at dollar stores or for discounted prices. A favorite snack and drink also shows how well you know someone and are nice presents as well!
