Grace Hilton is a senior at Hagerty High School and this is her second year on staff. Grace has been doing journalism for all four years of high school and has interests in political and opinion writing, as well as video reporting.

"It is a bright spot in my day because they're just so cute," Frasca said. "You always try as much as you can to find an hour to be a part of stuff like that, because it's fun."

Boys volleyball loses close game to Lake Howell

Senior Vaughn Poorman jumps to block the ball aside junior Colton Stephens. Both Poorman and Stephens played major defense against Lake Howell. “We put up a big block and [Poorman] blocked their outside in the beginning of the game,” senior teammate Vincent Tomeo said.

Jumping up, sophomore Pierson Boss goes to spike the ball. Boss, along with the rest of the team, was shocked by the outcome of the game. “Lake Howell is projected to win states and we stayed neck and neck with them the whole game… [It was] not expected,” Boss said.

Senior Vincent Tomeo serves the ball into play. The team held up strong against Lake Howell and won the first match. “We just went into it wanting to play our game,” Tomeo said. “On our best day we can beat anyone.”

Sophomore Igor Sauer serves the ball into play. The varsity team is made up of mostly seniors, but Sauer one of two sophomores. “[A key moment was Sauer] getting a match winning point in the first match,” sophomore teammate Pierson Boss said.

Senior Vincent Tomeo jumps to serve the ball. The varsity boys were competing against the second best team in the state, Lake Howell. “We felt like the first set, we were a better team,” Tomeo said. “Going forward we just want to come out swinging.”

Senior Marcel Clemens spikes the ball over the net. Clemens has been on the varsity team for three years. “The best way to improve is to stay consistent with your practice,” Clemens said. “Also, teamwork… the closer you become with your teammates the better you will work together.”

Senior Rachel Matthiesen plays defense at first base. Matthiesen spent the majority of the game on first base, making calls to the team. "A big win means a lot to us. We're starting to see the ball well and come together as a team," Mattheisen said.

Varsity softball triumphs over Viera

Junior Ella Verne pitches against Viera. Verne has pitched for all three years she's been on the team, and is one of four pitchers. "We work very well together and we're very good at making adjustments," Verne said.

Freshman Alina Gallagher slides into home base.

Freshmen Stella Christie crosses home plate after hitting a home run. The team beat Viera with a score of 12-3, with the help of a home run by Christie. "I think the win gives the team a lot of momentum for the upcoming games," Christie said.

Sophomore Abi Fitch scores a run against Viera. This is Fitch's first year on varsity.

Junior Lauren Carroll crosses home plate against Viera. This is Carroll's first year on varsity, and she has worked to become a core batter for the team. "I think the [win] was due to the energy and the hard work we put in at practice after our loss," junior Alexis Felker said. "We didn't give up and all of us kept working, and it showed."

Freshman Addison Bell sets up to bunt. Bell is a utility player during her first year on varsity, and has showed off her ability to step in when needed. "Our goal for every game of the season is just [to] put our best softball on the field," senior Rachel Matthiesen said.

Freshmen Stella Christie hits the ball. Though it is her first year on varsity, Christie managed a home run and numerous hits to bring her teammates home. "I think the energy the entire team had was essential, and the four or five runs also helped," Christie said.

Junior Alexis Felker springing up to hit a pitch. Felker made a home run in the fifth inning, putting the team in the lead. "We really picked up our energy on the field and it made us all excited to come back. After [Felker's] home run, we all started hitting as a team," junior Ella Verne said.

The drink vending machines remain on campus while the snack machines were removed. New vending machines will be installed some time in February.

Thompson coordinated the lesson plans for Holocaust Education Week and gave her own students more in-depth assignments. "We really can take our time and really learn about things in detail," Thompson said. "They can see a lot of parallels in modern day life, and be able to say 'I don't want to participate in that.' So. I think it gives them a broader perspective in life."

"Having [Foscolo] on varsity as a sophomore reminds us that age doesn't matter when it comes to whether or not you can contribute to the team," Senior Luis Rivero said. "He's an important batter in our lineup and valuable in the outfield."

Senior Henry Archavlis helps create blankets for children in the NICU. The National Honor Society met on Feb. 15 to sew blankets, inspired by their sponsor.
