The varsity boys basketball team entered the gym on Wednesday after a win over Harmony, and the team looked to win again in a non conference matchup, facing Atlantic High School. However, after a strong effort from the team, the game ended in a 73-55 loss.
For the first half of regulation, it was a tight game, with both teams neck and neck in scoring and defense. However, after halftime and into the third quarter, the Huskies fell behind as Liberty took a commanding 22-point lead, with nonstop three pointers. The team could not keep up, as their field goal shooting in general was not on target. On top of this, multiple shooting fouls committed by the team broke momentum, and further padded Liberty’s lead.
But the boys did not give up, and when heading into the fourth quarter, the defense tightened up, allowing fewer points to be scored in transition, which was their biggest hindrance in the third. Then, every one of Liberty’s possessions would drain the shock clock, with hard lockdown defense from the boys. Unfortunately, without enough defensive rebounds, the game clock would eat away, and the team was unable to climb back up to tie the game.
Junior guard Nolan Hammer was disappointed in the loss.
“Overall, our three-point shooting has to improve,” Hammer said. “We couldn’t keep up with them, and we fell behind.”
The boys will take on the Bishop Moore Hornets in the main gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 5, after coming back from winter break.
“I think we could have all played better, but let’s come out after the break and get our wins up,!” said guard Jaden McCrae.
