The Oviedo Parks and Recreational department has partnered with the athletic department to put together Saturday’s Fitness 5k and Wellness Expo in place of the Husky Trot. Since the City of Oviedo already had the Expo planned for the same day as the Husky Trot it was replaced with the Fitness 5k at Oviedo on the Park on Saturday, Feb. 3. The 5k will start at 7:30 a.m., and the Expo at 8:00 a.m..

“The city had an event already going on and they wanted to add a 5k,” athletic director Jay Getty said. “So we partnered and created a situation that the track teams at both schools could benefit from.”

Getty estimates that there will be about 500 people there for both the 5k and Expo, making this a more beneficial fundraiser than the Husky Trot was because it will be sponsored by the city rather than just the school.

The Expo will bring in vendors like the Florida Hospital, Strechzone and Crossfit.

“The organizations there deal with health and will be there as a demo for an awareness campaign towards a better you,” Getty said.

There is a $25 registration fee for the 5k, which includes a t-shirt. The proceeds made from the event will go to benefit both the Hagerty and Oviedo track and field programs.

Olympic bronze medalist and Oviedo high school alumni Jenny Simpson, one of the runners Getty coached in high school, will be there to hand out awards and will act as a grand marshal for the event.

Registration closes on Thursday, Feb. 1. Informational packets along with t-shirts will be available on Friday, Feb. 2 at the Oviedo Gymnasium and Aquatic Facility from 3-7  p.m,. as well as on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 6 a.m. at the Cultural Events Center at Oviedo on the Park.
