On Tuesday, Nov. 8, National English Honor Society held its first tutoring session after school, lending English help to seven students, and that number is expected to increase.

Teachers in the English department were contacted with information about the tutoring sessions, and English teachers Victoria Babington and Sarah Jarem offered extra credit to students who attended the first session.

“It’s the only way I found for help with tutoring, and it helped me with my essay writing,” sophomore Howard Snyder, who is in Babington’s English II class, said.

On Tuesday, teachers provided packets to help students prepare for the FSA Writing Test, in which they will write an essay at the end of the school year. Students can bring in homework they are struggling with, so they do not need to find extra materials to review with tutors.

The tutoring sessions are part of NEHS’s effort to have members participate in service activities that exercise their English skills. The group will also be reading to students at Carillon Elementary this year. Secretary Kelsey Zibell brought up the idea in an officer meeting, and the club ran with it.

“We were trying to come up with an activity that would be easier for some students to come to,” Zibell said. “There are a lot of new English teachers this year, so we wanted to help them as much as we could.”

Future sessions will be held twice a month on Tuesdays and will alternate between lower and upperclassmen tutoring. Over 20 NEHS members signed up to help with tutoring and will take turns covering sessions. Tutoring is available for students in all class levels.
