It is finally October, time to get into the true fall spirit with some fall decor. While it is possible to go out and buy pumpkins, whether real or Styrofoam, they are overpriced, quick to rot and not environmentally friendly. But what if you could make some upcycled, eco-friendly, cheap and adorable fall pumpkin decor yourself?
Supplies:
A sock
Kitchen twine/string
Scissors
Poly-fil (doll stuffing), rice or beans
A small stick
Hot glue
Rubber band
Fabric Marker/Sharpie/Paint Marker (optional)
Instructions:
Cut the closed end of the sock, by the heel. Especially if using a long sock, make sure you cut it under the bend, to make a pouch type shape.Stuff the pouch full of stuffing, so it is fairly tight to the sides, but not so tight it will burst.
Rubber band the top so the pouch makes a semi-spherical shape, it does not have to be perfect, just make sure it is tight.
Cut off some of the excess fabric, then glue one end of the string into the area with the bunched up fabric.
Now, wrap the string around to create the sections, going over the same spot on the bottom. Glue the loose end into the top.
Take the small stick, and glue it to the top to create a stem for the pumpkin. Wrap the string or yarn around to cover the rubber band, and tie it into a bow for a bit of extra flair.
*Bonus Idea* For an added spooky element, take a fabric marker and add a spooky face to make your adorable pumpkin into a fun Halloween jack-o-lantern.
Congrats! You have made your very own affordable and upcycled fall home decor. For more spooky spirit, repeat with different colors, sock sizes, and amount of stuffing to make an adorable assortment of decorative pumpkins.
