Most Marvel fans will say that the greatest films are those that center on action and complex plot twists, but they may have overlooked one of the best releases yet. Added to Disney Plus on Aug. 10, the kid-friendly series of short films titled “I Am Groot” shines a well-deserved spotlight on one of the Marvel universe’s most beloved characters.

Since it is more focused on comedic elements and not just plot, it differs from recent Marvel releases. This atypical prioritization is demonstrated in Groot’s instantaneous decision to initiate a dance-off with a mysterious creature, whose presence remains unexplained through the end of the film. However, it is these humorous moments that lend the shorts, and the character, their charm. The films’ combined watch time is only 30 minutes, and they are worth every second. Starring Groot’s innocent eyes and mischievous smile, these cute, funny stories are perfect to binge late at night or when in need of a quick laugh.

The plots follow the antics of the newly replanted Baby Groot as he gets into trouble of all sorts, aboard spacecraft and on different planets. Chronologically, they take place around the time of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2,’ but no context is necessary to understand the stories. They have no effect on the larger Marvel universe, and the humor can be enjoyed by anyone.

Watching the shorts is like getting to see the world through Groot’s eyes. His perspective is displayed through the large appearance of objects in comparison to the audience’s view and Groot’s size. This is put to use time after time as he attempts to carry items larger than he is, rides a bar of soap like a surfboard, and often climbs up or over objects.

Sound effects are key to the overall atmosphere of the films. Some classic Guardians of the Galaxy 70’s pop is guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone’s face, and in addition to that, the frequent use of dramatic classical music perfectly conveys Groot’s overly exaggerated feelings. The movements of the scenes and characters are timed to match with this music, providing a seamless, well-developed mood that makes up for the very few words that are actually spoken aloud.

The silly, lighthearted nature of the series is a far cry from the horror genre that Marvel had previously been leaning towards, with films such as “Moon Night”and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Though Groot’s childish nature and the overall lack of seriousness throughout the series will not appeal to some traditional fans, it is precisely those elements that make it so enjoyable for many.
