Defender Edie Wilkins runs the ball down the field in transition. Girls varsity beat Vero Beach 7-6.

Give everything, fear nothing,” the motto for the girls varsity lacrosse team, was running through the girls’ heads. They were up by one with 30 seconds left in the game. The team was holding the ball and dodging defenders trying to wait the time out. Then the final buzzer went off.

The girls made program history Wednesday, Feb. 23 by beating nationally ranked Vero Beach High School for the first time in program history.

“We had really good communication and we worked really well as a team for the first time,” midfielder Stacey Glover said.

The final score of the game was 7-6. Glover and midfielder Hannah Thomas were two of the top performers, Glover scored three goals for the team, and Thomas scored two. There were a lot of back and forth plays between both teams, but Hagerty stayed in the lead throughout the game.

“Our team chemistry was really good that night, we did a good job of really working together on the offensive end and putting it together,” midfielder Melina Lange said.

Going into the game the team was feeling very confident and ready for this big game. Their mindset was: they have the talent, they have been working hard, now it is time to execute. They held the lead throughout the whole game, and they won the majority of their draw controls. The offense did their job, and executed their game plan well.

“I was super excited for the game because that was what we work for at practice every day to get chances to play a ranked team like that, and we beat them,” Lange said.

The team’s energy was ecstatic throughout the whole game, there was never a dull moment. This team has a lot of grit, passion and sisterhood, and it showed out on the field that night.

“I think we all worked together super well and played as a team and not just for ourselves,” midfielder Hannah Thomas said. “We kept the momentum up and I think that’s what really also helped us get that big one.”

The team has put together a tough early season schedule, and after the Vero Beach win they will face Bartram Trail, American Heritage, Lake Highland Prep, Bishop Moore and IMG Academy. The team prepares for these big opportunities by practicing every day and figuring out specific strategies to use against each team.

The girls’ beat Lake Brantley, now their next goal is to beat Bartram Trail at 7. Tickets can be found on gofan.com.
