After a perfectly placed pass from midfielder Siara Youngblood just outside the left side of the box, forward Rachel Pyro shot the ball past the goalkeeper and scored the first goal for the girls varsity soccer team, but it was not enough. 

The girls soccer team fell short to Lyman 2-1, in a close conference matchup on Thursday, Nov. 14.

When the match started, the team came out aggressive, dominating possession of the ball. Early in the game, Youngblood attempted a shot on goal from just outside the middle of the box leading to an early corner with 25:33 left in the first half. Soon after, Youngblood passed the ball up to midfield, giving Pyros a shot at net, leading to the first goal to put the girls varsity up 1-0.

Midway through the first half, Lyman created a fast break chance, tying the game at one with 9:56 left. Then, late in the match, Lyman forced a corner. The ball reached the box, but the attempt was saved by the goal keeper keeping it 1-1 at the half.

“At times we looked really strong, but we just had a couple breakdowns toward the end and a lack of finishing,” head coach Angie Densberg said.

During the second half, both teams struggled to find the back of the net. Early in the second half, Lyman created another fast break opportunity, scoring a goal to make it 2-1 with 16:56 left in the game. With time winding down, the team drove the ball down the field one last time creating a possible game tying goal. Pyros shot the ball from the left side of the box, but the attempt was saved by the keeper, ending the game at 2-1.

The team fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference. They play their next match away against Oviedo on Monday, Nov. 18.

“It was a very physical game, but my girls didn’t back down to the physicality and fought a competitive game,” said Densberg.
