Those who purchase order forms can have the club decorate their friends’ or significant others’ lockers with personalized messages for Valentine’s Day or birthdays.

Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1, the Girl Up club will hold a locker decorating fundraiser for Valentine’s Day.

Order forms are $4 and tables will be set up at both lunches on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The idea is similar to that of a candy gram, but the club will decorate lockers with personalized messages for Valentine’s Day or birthdays during the month of February.

Girl Up is affiliated with the United Nations, so funds will go toward providing girls with education and empowerment in Uganda, Malawi, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India and Liberia. Through fundraisers like this one, the UN Foundation’s Girl Up campaign is able to pass initiatives like the Girls Count Act, which was recently signed into legislation.

Club co-president Juliana Voelker reports that she has received nothing but positive feedback since the club’s founding at the beginning of the school year.

“The community has been so supportive; they are excited that today’s youth is active and informed in political affairs,” Voelker said. “Guest speakers are more than happy to help us further understand world affairs.”

Co-president Alyssa Martin arranged for missionary Lauren Ferguson to speak to the club, whom she first heard speak at her church about her experience helping girls involved in human trafficking in the Dominican Republic with New Way Missions. Martin hopes to schedule more guest speakers like Ferguson in coming months, in addition to plans for volunteering with Clean the World and Feed the Children.

“So far the students have come up with a nice agenda and I’m happy they’ve been able to get a group of students together who will routinely come talk about women’s issues,” club sponsor Romina Jannotti said.

Girl Up meets on the first Fridays of each month. Their next meeting is this Friday, Feb. 3 in room 6-109.
