Environmental club holds first meeting, re-establishing the club after four years
Environmental Science club members socialize before the meeting starts. Most participants were juniors and seniors.
For the first time in four years, the Environmental Science club kicked off the year with its first meeting on Monday Sept. 19, under the supervision of Marc Pooler, members discussed future plans.
Environmental Science club focuses on educating students about the environment through projects, community service events, field trips and discussing environmental issues and their solutions.
“This year we definitely want to re-establish our base group and get more of the younger people involved,” vice-president Jessica Birr said. “We’re hoping that after this club they will go out of their way to help the environment and they will be more aware of how they impact the environment.”
The club is planning on participating in field trips such as environmental science centers and bird watching trips. They will also take part in the school’s garden in which they will grow vegetables which will provide the culinary department with food they can use in the class.
In order to help the environment, the club will volunteer in the Seminole Education Restoration Volunteers program where they will be cleaning lakes and rivers, improving their water quality and removing invasive species growing on shorelines. They will be also participating in Adopt-a-River program in which students agree to clean-up specific sections of two rivers, and learn about water quality, conservations and environmental issues.
Those who decide to join and be an active member of the club, must participate in at least three club events per semester and can only miss three meetings. The meetings will take place twice a month in room 3-203. During meetings, club officials will discuss upcoming events and current environmental issues.
“We are hoping to educate our members and make them understand the issues with of our environment because I know that a lot of people don’t really know what the issues are or they aren’t fully educated,” Birr said.
The club is still accepting new members and the next meeting will be Oct. 10. In this meeting, club members will get to know each other better and club officials will get to interact with the members more.
