Junior and DECA president Laura Darty poses for a picture after receiving a first place medal for presentation in her category.

On March 5, the Distributive Education Clubs of America chapter, began competing in a three-day, state wide competition chaperoned by club sponsor Matthew Thompson. Hosted at the Florida Hotel, hundreds of chapters from across the state gathered to participate in the numerous career-cluster based competitions surrounding marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism.

Junior and president of the club Laura Darty placed first in presentation in the Quick Service restaurant management category.

“I was only given 10 minutes with the prompt, but overall my judge presentation went really smoothly.” said Darty. “Since it was everyone’s first time, we spent most of the day getting situated. It was pretty stressful at times.”

Four other DECA members, including junior and vice-president Ariana Milnes,  accompanied Darty to the competition, however, no other representative placed.

“We’re one of only two schools in central Florida that were invited to compete,” said Milnes. “My teammates did a really good job of representing Hagerty, especially considering we’re such a small DECA group.”

The DECA club hopes to branch out more in the following school year to gain more members and overall support for future competitions.
