On March 2-3, a program-record seven wrestlers competed in the state championships and finished third as a team. Six of the seven wrestlers placed in the top five, including two runners-up, seniors Devin Kohn and Justin Segarra.

The team finished third with 108 points, behind Fleming Island (124 points) and South Dade (210 points); schools that were the top two finishers last year. However, along with two individual runners-up, the team also had two third-place-finishers: junior Ethan Woods and sophomore Bo Perkins. Junior Ryan Rowland placed fifth, and sophomore Dylan Kohn and senior Matt Kaplan placed in the top eight.

Devin Kohn, who wrestled with two torn meniscuses, thought the championship could have been better.

“The refs were some of the worst I’ve ever had and we had to wait three hours to start the first day because of technical issues,” Devin Kohn said. “I wish I would have won but I just have to keep working hard.”

This was the first top three finish in program history; last year, the team placed ninth. The team will look to build their program and place more wrestlers to work toward a state championship.

“We are going to prepare the same way we did this summer. I’m going to give the guys a couple weeks off, but they are going to be itching to get back in and do some training and conditioning,” head coach Scotty Diaz said. “We all have the same mindset right now. We are happy we got third, but we are not satisfied.”
