Winter fashion for Floridian gals

Attempting to follow winter fashion trends in Florida can be pretty difficult, considering temps never dip below the mid-60s. True, the choice to wear that one nice coat loitering in our closets from last year’s trip to NYC can never be justified, but there are still ways to stay on trend without over-bundling. Below are three outfits with pieces inspired by looks straight from the runways, plus a breakdown of this season’s emerging trends. Of course, the likelihood of any high school student being able to afford designer items is very low, so cheaper alternatives are linked as well. Listen: mama knows how to ball on a budget.

While chunky ‘70s velvet/suede platforms have been in for a minute, thanks to designers like Prada and Ralph Lauren, embroidered jeans are a new winter closet staple. Paired with the ever-dependable form-fitting turtleneck, funky tasseled earrings and a bright lip, this look is an instant classic. Bring along a simple black clutch and big, monochrome cat eye sunglasses to keep it on-the-go. Afraid of the heel and the bright colors? It’s all good. Opt for a pointed ballet flat and nude lips and let the jeans do the talking.

fasion2The white-t-shirt-under-silk-slip-evening-gown outfit idea started as street style, but was taken up on runways by Chanel and similar artists. On the same note, biker jackets returned to the catwalk, but were reinvigorated by juxtaposing them with more feminine pieces and detailing. Adding a nude or petal pink ankle boot with a clear heel, as worn by stars like Rihanna and Victoria Beckham, can bring this cool girl vibe to the table. Finish off the look with a thin choker, fuzzy chain purse and clear or lightly-tinted gloss and bask in the fashion forward-ness. Are you headed to your million dollar penthouse, or just the grocery store to pick up some milk? The world may never know.

There’s no doubt about it, floor-length pleated skirts are back in the game, as seen at Céline and Valentino shows. Pleated skirts that aren’t mini might seem like they were pulled from grandma’s closet, but never you fear: styling it is stupidly easy. Marry this trend with the metallics seen on the runways of Balenciaga, Dolce and Gabbana and Michael Kors to create a futuristic, ballerina-meets-Barbarella look. Then, kick it up a notch with a satin bomber jacket with floral accents, layered over a graphic band tee. Complete the ensemble by tricking out the usual white sneaker trend with some more metallic flare. Scrunch the jacket sleeves to the elbows and add a minimal watch or cuff bracelet to make this look a real home run.
