With varsity taking the week off, it was JV’s turn in the football spotlight, and they did not disappoint.

The JV team shellacked Lake Howell on Thursday night in Sam Momary Stadium, 40-12.

Sophomore quarterback Jack Benzija led the team in touchdowns, with three, while fellow sophomores, running backs Tyler Kielma and Sammy Cordero, also scored.

“I couldn’t have done it without my line,” Kielma said.

Meanwhile, on the defensive side, sophomore defensive back Ian Watts pulled off a duo of highlight worthy plays. One was a one-handed deflection that halted a would-be Lake Howell touchdown, while the other was an interception returned over 80 yards for the only defensive touchdown of the night.

“I just followed my blockers, [and] tried to get space between me and Lake Howell,” Watts said.

However, despite only giving up 12 points, coach Sean Rivera still sees room to improve.

“[The] defense has a little bit of kinks, but we’ve got a week to get them fixed up,” Rivera said.

JV next sets their eyes on the first away game against Winter Springs, on Sept. 1.

With the first game complete, the team looks to continue last year’s JV win streak.

“I think we’re going to be good for the season,” Cordero said.

Earlier in the day, freshman D.J. McCunney had a multiple touchdown game of his own as the freshman football team beat Lake Howell, 14-7.
