Softball looks for successful season
The change in districts has done little to affect the performance of fast pitch softball. Currently 3-1 in their season, the team looks to triumph in the games to come.
Their new 8a district is made up of three schools: Winter Springs, Lake Howell and Evans, all of which they will play twice throughout the season.
Their first game, against Spruce Creek on Feb. 5, showcased the talent of the senior-heavy team with a 5–4 win, with seniors Jordan Miller and Alicia Tomberlin scoring a triple and a double respectively. The game was then immediately followed by a victory against Oviedo, 10-0, on Feb. 9.
The team’s only loss was 1-0 to Winter Springs on Feb. 11 after the other team scored a last-minute run in the bottom of the ninth. Immediately following that game, however, was the Feb. 12 win against state-ranked Canterbury high school, 10-0, where senior Erin Crawford pitched a shutout.
“Since the start of the season, we’ve been motivated,” Crawford said. “We have a lot of seniors who are [committed], so that also definitely sets a tone for the rest of the team and motivates everyone to work hard and live up to the standard.”
Of the 8 seniors, 6 are committed to colleges, with Jordan Miller going to Colgate University, catcher Alicia Tomberlin and Miranda Green going to Daytona State, Maggie Borosky and Chelsea Johnson going to Thomas University and Sarah Harrison going to Rollins College.
“We’ve got a great mix of players this year,” Miller said. “And while we’re hopeful for a successful season, we’re also looking to continue building our skills so we’ll do well for post-season and so we can beat Winter Springs next time around.”
On Thursday, Feb. 18, the team won 15-0 at home against Evans in their second district face-off after sophomore Ashley Worrell pitched a perfect game.
Their next match is Friday, Feb. 19, at home against Lake Brantley.
