On Friday, Dec. 11, the dance department hosted their annual Winter Spectacular, featuring Christmas Classics such as Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby” and Frank Loesser’s “Baby It’s Cold Outside.”

“I think it went great,” Unleashed captain Rachel Campany said. “We set the bar high for this year, and our coaches were proud.”

The teams began preparing three weeks before showtime and had to practice the most for the opening, Jerry Herman’s “We Need A Little Christmas,” which included both varsity and junior varsity. Dance 1 followed with their performance of John Parry Ddall’s “Deck the Rooftop.”

The entire show was based off of the different levels of dance and how the dancers progress by having middle school, high school and college dancers perform.

Both Jackson Heights and Lawton Chiles Middle Schools brought dance teams to perform throughout the show and the UCF dancers, KnightMoves, also came to perform at the very end before awards were given to various Unleashed dancers for being inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts.

“I think it went pretty well, considering we had less time than we usually do to put our dances together,” junior varsity captain Chloe Nichols said.

Solos and duets, which were randomly performed throughout the show, were all choreographed by the dancers in the performance and all the songs were hand-picked by the performers. Dancers such as junior Kyle Riodran and sophomore Alex Navarro had solos, along with being in group performances with the rest of the varsity Unleashed team.

The varsity performances, such as “Retaliation” and “Girls,” are the same routines that the team will be performing for Nationals in January. It required weeks of preparation to get each and every dancer in sync with the rest.

“I’m just so proud of how hard all the girls worked, especially JV,” Navarro said. “The show had such a great turnout.”
