Girls soccer dominates Lake Minneola
On Tuesday, Dec. 1 the varsity girls soccer team played against Lake Minneola and ended the game with a 2-0 win, improving the team’s record of 4-3-3. Both goals were made by striker Julia England and goalie Erika Grasso had a big performance, not allowing any goals in the win.
“The beginning of the game was really rough,” left back Sydney Stoneback said. “We hadn’t played them before, and we were trying to set our back line in while trying to capitalize on a lot of our weaknesses but then as soon as the second half started we dominated the game.”
The team focused on in-field plays with Stoneback and England driving the ball with help from forward Taia Gomez to open up more opportunities for a goal. Most of the game included Gomez taking several shots but missing by only a few feet.
Center defense Meagan Lee also attempted to score and drive the ball towards England, but was taken out for a leg injury with four minutes left in the first half.
“The field was really slippery, so not only was the game rough, but a lot of people were falling,” attacking mid Katy Dickerson said.
A 2-0 loss against Oviedo last week made some of the players nervous for next week’s game against them on Thursday, Dec. 10. The team also plays Winter Park, the leading team in the region, on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Some of the players, such as Dickerson and Stoneback, will travel for a tournament this weekend for their club team, which, according to Stoneback, is more skilled-based than strength-based.
“High school soccer is different from club soccer because there’s a lot of girls that go out that haven’t played before,” Stoneback said. “Most of their game is basically push-and-shove rather than skill.”
Overall, the girls successfully scored twice, one at the 21 minute mark in the first half and another at 29 minutes left in the game, with lots of possession and drive in the first and the second half despite the fact that they had never played Lake Minneola. The next game is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 8 against Lake Howell.
