Chorus performs their first Fall Masterworks Concert in the auditorium on Thursday Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Although the performance is only about an hour long, the top two choirs have been preparing since the first day of school.

The concert is $5 per ticket and will include Voices of Hagerty, an all girls group performing Stabat Mater by Giovanni Pergolesi, and the Concert Choir, a mixed group performing Mass No. 2 in G by Franz Schubert. The two pieces are in Latin and were created for church masses but are used to put a spotlight on the many different aspects of music other than a religious perspective. Both pieces have multiple songs within them so the solos and duets for individual songs were carefully picked.

Chorus teacher for both Voices of Hagerty and Concert Choir, Victoria Rathbun, prepared by overseeing the groups’ mastery of the individual pieces and fine-tuning their harmonies.

“[This performance] is a matter of connecting the exact right group of students with the exact right piece for them, and that opportunity doesn’t arrive every year,” Rathbun said.

Students in Voices of Hagerty that have solos and duets are encouraged to rehearse outside of class with their voice teachers and have been preparing since May. Both choirs have been rehearsing their pieces since school started in August.

Along with the students’ individual preparations, they practice as a group in class in order to perfect facial expressions, dynamic markings and diction within the music. On the day before the performance, they have a rehearsal that includes the string quartet from Rollins College to officially tie everything together before showtime.

“I know everyone is nervous because we’ve been preparing since the first day of school, but a lot of us are really excited for our family and peers to see how much we’ve accomplished,” senior Sarah Injo said.

Upcoming concerts and events include the winter concert on Dec. 8 in the auditorium at 7 p.m. and will showcase Christmas classics such as “Carol of the Bells,” and Disney’s candlelight performance at Epcot on Dec. 5 at 6:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. as well as on Dec. 9 at 5 p.m.
