Craft Corner: Creepy Crawly Spiders

Spiders, ghosts and goblins, oh my! Halloween is creeping closer, but what is even scarier than the creatures that lurk on Halloween is the price for cute decorations. So why not make them at home for a lot less? Spiders, the crawly creatures commonly associated with Halloween and all things spooky, are one decoration that are cheaper and better to make at home

Materials

cardboard
fabric
paint to match the color scheme of the fabric
popsicle sticks
newspaper
tape
hot glue
googly eyes
command hook
scissors

Step 1

Gather all supplies.

Step 2

Cut out one larger circle, and one smaller one out of cardboard. One will serve as the body, and the other as the head of the spider.

Step 3

Cut a small hole out of the lower section of the head or in the body, depending on how you want it to hang. To hang it head-up, put the hole in the head piece, or upside down, put the hole in the body piece of cardboard. This will let the spider “climb” on the wall.

Step 4

Bunch up some newspaper, and tape to each section. It should be a domed shape, to give the impression of the body of a spider.

Step 5

Cut out the shape in fabric to cover each section. Hot glue the edges of the fabric onto the back. If you want or have it, you can use faux fur or fuzzy fabric to create texture.

Step 6

Hot glue the two segments together. With the eight popsicle sticks, decorate them to your liking.

Step 7

Glue them to the back of the body you have created. These will be legs. For decoration, painting the sticks or covering them in the same fabric is recommended. When gluing the sticks, make sure to put two coming off of either side of the “head,” and the rest off of the “body.”

Step 8

Add googly eyes to the head, four on each side, stick your Command hook to the wall and hang your spider up!

Boo! Just like that, you have an adorable, or terrifying, hanging spider. Watch it defy gravity, as if it was really crawling up or down the wall. And all out of common household materials! To give your creepy crawly some friends, repeat with different colors and designs for a unique display.
