“Every donation, no matter the size, makes a real difference,” Unity Alliance co-president Helen Pan said.
Since Sept. 22, the Unity Alliance has been accepting donations of cleaning and hygiene supplies for Zebra Youth, a nonprofit that helps provide mental health counseling, temporary housing and a community for youth between the ages of 13 to 24, specifically for LGBTQ+ youth.
Zebra Youth aims to provide vital resources and support to help the LGBTQ+ youth making up about 40% of young people experiencing homelessness.
“By contributing, you are helping provide essentials like soap, toothpaste and cleaning supplies that the youth might not otherwise have access to,” Pan said.
Donations can be dropped off at sponsor Katherine Lechner’s room, 7-209. These donations could be items like soap, toothpaste, cleaning supplies and anything that would help keep living spaces clean and tidy. These packages should be unopened.
The donation box will be open until Oct. 3, with the community optimistic about the event.
Having been involved in the club since she was a freshman, Pan has seen the group grow and evolve over the years.
“It’s great to have a community where we can support each other,” Pan said. And not having fear of being targeted or being judged for who we are.
The alliance is excited to reach out and support other organizations, taking a more direct role in their community service for this semester.
“That’s why donations matter, they ensure these young people have the essentials they need to focus on healing, growth, and hope,” Pan said.
The Unity Alliance has worked to aid these groups in need, working to go beyond acceptance and community by reaching people and meeting their needs.
“You’re not just giving items—you’re showing support and giving young people the chance to focus on their goals and dreams without having to worry about basic necessities,” Pan said.
