Finishing the regular season without a loss, the girls weightlifting team defeated Lyman on Wednesday, Dec. 4, before commencing the senior night ceremony in celebration of their 10 seniors. Top performers in the competition included seniors Jaycee Vanhoozer, Alyssa Basilo, Alexis Williamson and Eileen Sauvao.
Basilo, who usually competes in the 169-pound weight class, placed third in the 183-pound weight class, earning the team one point for the match.
“It’s been really exciting. It’s fun to have a good team who succeeds together,” Basilo said.
Following the 183-pound weight class, Vanhoozer placed first in the 199-pound weight class and earned the team five points.
After the competition, seniors participated in the senior night ceremony and took pictures in front of the team banner with their coaches and families.
This win marked the end of the girls weightlifting team’s regular season, leaving the team with a record of 5-0. The team continuously took home victories, beating Seminole on Nov. 20 61-29, with senior Alexis Williamson placing second in the 183-pound weight class. The team also succeeded over Lake Mary in a 58-34 win, as well as Winter Springs 64-26, and Oviedo 50-36.
After the end of their regular season, the team will compete in the Seminole Athletic Conference Competition on Dec. 13. District meets will take place in late January. Competing at the district meet is the first step to qualifying for states, a viable goal considering last season saw a total of 11 girls, including Vanhoozer and Basilo, moving on.
“This season has been very fun, and it’s been great making memories with people and seeing everyone grow,” Williamson said.
