The beginning of high school is a daunting time. Along with social and emotional burdens, the pressure of school and career choices reaches a new peak. In order to make the process of adjusting to high school life less formidable for students, College and Career counselor Dr. Andrea Fuhrer held a seminar Monday in the media center with members of the senior class to give advice for younger students.
The main objective of the event was to emphasize important steps to take in the early years of high school to set yourself up for success.
“I really want to help our underclassmen to be smart and strategic about what they do early on, because it can make such a difference for them and the scholarships and the opportunities that are available,” said Fuhrer.
Fuhrer chose eight seniors to speak, representing the senior class and sharing experiences as well as advice for attendees.
“I wanted to inform the younger classmen of what they could really do and accomplish within their high school,” senior Vietlong Bui said. “A lot of things can seem daunting at times, especially with social media pushing forward these extremely high achieving students. Students need to realize that they can also do that too. As long as you can seize every opportunity that you can, you’re going to be able to go far.”
Bui, and his fellow seniors, shared everything they’ve involved themselves in their field of interest, spreading from military to music.
“They all have a very different story, and very different walks of life, but the one thing they all have in common is they have all worked very hard to get here,” Fuhrer said. “I wanted to be able to have students that represent different pieces of success so that this audience could connect to different students that are in the room.”
Along with other College and Career events, the program aims to help students find their own path and be the best they can be.
“[We wanted] to educate people about all the different opportunities that there are. Because my freshman year and sophomore year, I didn’t know about any. I felt like I was behind, because I didn’t know about a lot of the opportunities that existed,” senior speaker Grace Jackson said. “There’s a lot of great resources out there. You just have to have the motivation to do it and do it right.”
