The girls volleyball team defeated Creekside 3-0 in the regional quarterfinals. This is their second win over Creekside this season. The match was held on Oct. 23 with the Huskies starting off strong, winning the first set 25-19. The team did not let up in the second set, winning 25-20 and managed to finish off the match even stronger with a 25-17 win in the final set.
Coming off a 3-0 loss to number one seed Winter Park the team bounced back with a win, being led by outside hitter Mikayla Miessler with 17 kills, outside hitter Jenness Orcutt with 12 kills, and setter Brielle Mullen with 40 assists. Mullen is ranked 58th in the state for assists.
With a sweep against Creekside, the focus shifted to the regional semifinal where they will face Winter Park again which may prove to be more challenging than Wednesday’s match. Winter Park has been on an 18 game winning streak and boasts a 24-1 record.
“I think the last game we walked in not prepared and with a negative mindset, if we contribute mentally the physical stuff will follow after,” outside hitter Samiya Bolton said. “In our heads we had already lost [the last game] so the physical aspect didn’t contribute as much.”
Bolton finished the match with eight kills and eight digs. She ranks 23rd in the district for kills with 51 for the season.
The team views communication as something that needs to be improved to continue their 14-9 season. They have picked up their performance in October, winning three of their last four games.
“I think we started off really strong then we kind of went downward, now we’re bringing it back up again because we’re talking more so we just got to talk a lot more during the game and I think we can win,” middle blocker Sophia Wattles said.
If the girls defeat Winter Park on Oct. 26 they will advance to the regional finals, facing off against the winner between second seed Deland and third seed Lake Brantley.
