Latinos in Action brought the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month on Oct. 4 with a courtyard game day event. During both lunch periods, students gathered to participate in traditional games such as pin the tail on the donkey and guess the flag in celebration of Hispanic culture.
“We wanted to incorporate Hispanic Heritage more at Hagerty this year,” club member Samantha Delanuez said. “Hispanic Heritage Month is about recognizing and celebrating our culture, and these games are a part of that tradition.”
Guess the flag was a crowd favorite, with students testing their knowledge of Hispanic country flags to win prizes like stickers and candy.
“I know a lot of the Hispanic countries’ flags and it’s fun to see others guess and learn the symbols for each country,” junior Michelle Fernandez said. “It was cool to see everyone come together and just have fun.”
For many students, the games held a deeper cultural significance they wanted to share with the school.
“Pin the tail on the donkey is a game most of us grew up playing at family gatherings,” Delanuez said. “It’s nice getting to share those experiences with others.”
The event not only served as a celebration of heritage but also as an opportunity to bring the school community closer.
“We wanted everyone to feel welcome, whether they’re Latino or not,” senior Missel Moreno said. “Events like this help build connections between different cultures and make our school a more inclusive place.”
Students from Latinos in Action especially loved organizing this event to share their culture with other students.
“One of my favorite parts, because I’m Hispanic, is that I get to let people know about my culture, the games and Hispanic countries,” Fernandez said. “Most of the students here are not Hispanic, so I like that [these games] give us a chance to share the culture.”
With the success of Game Day, Latinos in Action is looking forward to future events that continue to celebrate Hispanic culture.
“We hope this event inspires others to learn more about our traditions and participate in upcoming celebrations. And we’re excited for future events we have planned for Christmas and throughout the rest of the year,” Moreno said.
