The score was 14-9 against Oviedo in the regional semi-final match up for beach volleyball. Hagerty’s line one, seniors Abby Mas and Mayte Camacho, went to serve for game point and it was shanked by Oviedo. Mas and Camacho hugged while the team rushed to crowd around them, winning the match 2-1, and qualifying to play in Tallahassee.
“Going means a lot, especially this being my senior year. I am really excited to go for the third time with Abby [Mas] by my side. It has been really special and I think this trip will top off my career at Hagerty,” Camacho said.
Second line junior Brielle Mullen and sophomore Jeness Orcutt won 2-0, third line sophomores Mikayla Miessler and Ally Leach won 2-0, fourth line senior Madelyn Schwartz and junior Layla Miller won 2-0 and fifth line freshmans Madison Mehring and Eva Woolm lost 2-0 making the final score 4-1.
“We mainly practiced our shots,” Schwartz said. “Layla [Miller] did a lot of individual work with our coaches about placing the ball in a specific spot based on who our opponents were.”
This is the third year in a row since the start of beach volleyball at Hagerty that the team will be heading to Tallahassee to compete in the regional championship. Last year the team won the regional championship 5-0 against Charlotte but lost in the first round of the final four against Westminster Christian 3-1.
“We are practicing every day leading up to it and trying to make some quick adjustments that will help us win,” Camacho said. “We are also focusing on blocking and getting the ball over on two.”
The team will head to Tallahassee to play Charlotte at 8 a.m on May 10.
“This means everything,” Schwartz said. “This was my main goal this season- to make it to Tallahassee for my senior season, it is one of my favorite trips of the year because we all have fun and play well.
