The girls basketball team increased their record to 13-6 with a win over Winter Springs on Jan. 29. The team was led by forward Kylie Kitts who’s averaging 25.5 points and almost 15 rebounds this season.
Hagerty led at halftime with a score of 21-18. The Huskies applied more pressure in the second half pushing their lead to nine points by the end of the game with a final score of 50-41.
“Going into the second half we needed to play a little bit harder, Winter Springs was playing a little harder than us so we wanted to match their intensity. We knew if we were able to do that we could pull off and get a bigger lead,” coach Whitney Tossie said.
The team has had a busy schedule, having played four games in the five days leading up to Monday’s game. All four games were wins.
“We’ve been off for a couple days, we haven’t practiced so today was a good win for us as a team,” Tossie said.
The win was helped in part by the defensive performance of Narelis De Alba who is averaging 2.1 steals per game. De Alba transferred to Hagerty from Lake Mary. The personal performances of Kitts and De Alba were only a part of the team effort it took to continue their five game win streak.
“I don’t think it was one player, tonight was really a team effort we had to grind this game out,” Tossie said.
The team would end their win streak the following night with a 74-36 loss to Lake Highland Prep, but they are scheduled to play Boone Feb 1. as their last regular season game before taking on 5th seed Winter Park in the first round of the 7A District 4 tournament on Feb 5. Hagerty is currently the 4th seed.
If the team advances they will face number one seated Colonial, who knocked them out of the tournament in the second round last season.
