Girls lacrosse demolishes Oviedo

On Monday, March 29, the girls lacrosse team dominated Oviedo in a 12-1 win.
The team was led by attacker Ellie Wilkins and defender Sofia Wojtasiak, with both players receiving offensive and defensive player of the game honors, recognized by head coach Mitch Whittington
“We knew that they were going to have a lot of cutters and we were going to have to be active at all times,” Wojtasiak said. “Mary and I were always communicating and making sure we were always on the same page.”
Wilkins led the offensive barrage with five goals of her own, one of which came off an assist from midfielder Hannah Thomas from a free position shot, a free shot due to a foul on the other team.
Wilkins was also able to take advantage of Oviedo by recognizing some of their defensive tendencies.
“[Oviedo’s] defense was not sending slides so if I could beat my defender I had a straight shot at the goal,” Wilkins said. “I realized their goalie was pretty good at saving high shots so I had to start shooting low.”
Oviedo’s only goal in the contest came off a mishandled pass in the crease, where the ball slid off the attacker’s stick, took a huge bounce and dropped in behind the goalie.
Their strategy to stick to a specific offense held well and should prove successful for more challenging games in the future and leading into the postseason.
This game brings their record to 9-4. Their next matchup will be at 7 p.m. against Episcopal School of Jacksonville at Sam Momary Stadium.
