Douglas wins car
On Saturday, May 18, junior Kristin Douglas won the Grand Prize (a silver 2013 Honda Fit) in the Holler Honda “Fit for College”. The contest began last December and ended in April. High school students in Seminole and Orange counties could enter.
“As soon as my key started that engine, my heart stopped in complete excitement. It was so surreal that I actually just won a car!” Douglas said.
To be eligible, students had to provide report cards from the first, second and third quarters. National Merit scholars were able to enter three times, straight As earned participants two entries, and As and Bs got them one entry. Once a new quarter began, you could add new entries. Douglas entered a total of five times.
The top ten winners were present at 11 a.m. at the ceremony on Saturday. Though only one contestant could win the car, the others received a $1,000 voucher towards a car. Also, every top ten competitor was given an iPad mini.
“I’m definitely going to use [the iPad] to research scholarships for school and more stuff for college, trying to decide where I should apply,” Douglas said.
Douglas is looking to the future after winning the car. She will be using it to drive to and from school and to go volunteer this summer. Douglas imagines that it will help when she saves up for college, hoping that the car will last throughout college.
“It was truly a blessing,” Douglas said.
