Varsity football falls to Oviedo

The varsity team sings the Alma Mater after the game. After being tied 10-10 at the half, Oviedo scored twice in the second half to win 24-10.

With four seconds left in the first half, kicker Brandon Adams nailed a career long 46-yard field goal to tie the score at 10-10 leading into halftime against Oviedo.

On Friday, Oct. 25, the varsity football team fell short to rival Oviedo in a 24-10 away match up.

During the first quarter, the team failed to get something going, punting in their first few possessions allowing Oviedo to score an early passing touchdown. Late in the first quarter, the varsity defense conceded three more points off of a short field goal. 

After the first quarter, the varsity team played more aggressive, leading to more first downs on the ground and in the air. Soon after a short passing play, running back Josh Bozzacco ran the ball up the middle to score the first points for the varsity team, cutting the lead to three. During the next possession, the defense forced a fumble giving Hagerty the ball back with only 46 seconds left in the half, allowing the team to set up a 46 yard field goal by Adams tying the the game at ten going into halftime.

“The team played very well, we fought back throughout the game,” Adams said.

  When the third quarter started, the varsity’s defense came out strong by forcing an immediate three and out, giving the ball to varsity at the 23 yard line. After the three and out, Bozzacco outran the entire defense for a 77 yard rushing touchdown, but after the play was called back due to a holding penalty, the varsity team punted giving Oviedo good field position leading to a rushing touchdown by Oviedo. 

  “Our boys played their hearts out and played with great effort,” head coach Robert Allen said.

  Late in the fourth quarter, after both teams turned the ball over on fumbles, the varsity team had one last chance to stop Oviedo. The Lions had the ball 4th and one at hagerty’s 15 yard line. The defense came up short, as Oviedo’s running back scored the final touchdown of the game making it 24-10 with only 46 seconds left.

  “The team gave it their all and I’m proud of every single one of them no matter the outcome,” Bozzacco said.

  The varsity football team fell to 4-5 and 2-1 in the conference. The team plays their last game is on Friday, Nov. 1, at Flagler Palm at 7 p.m.
