On Wednesday, Jan. 18, varsity boys soccer defeated University Orlando 3-0 at home.  The team was led by two goals and an assist from striker Jordan Snoap.

After going scoreless through the first half, Benoit scored the first goal with the assist from Snoap.  Following this play, Snoap was able to continue the scoring barrage. One play came from center mid Juan Gomez’ pass leading Snoap into the break allowing him to score.  Snoap’s other goal came after Benoit cut back, surveyed the field and then crossed the ball over for a header from Snoap.

“Scotty getting the goal really got us on track and we continued from there, we just needed to hit the back of the net and that gave us confidence,” head coach Michael McAvoy said.

After a 16-0 start to the season, the team had lost three straight, Team captains and the coaching staff placed an emphasis on teamwork and being positive throughout this game, and despite a game full of physical play and multiple fouls, the team remained composed.

“The captains had a talk with the whole team to make sure we change our attitude and be positive, and it gave us this win,” Gomez said.

The communication of the team, as well as the eight saves from goalie Chris Hagglund, led to a shutout of University.  Holding long possessions on offense allowed the team to reduce the amount of attempts that their opponents could take.

“Those losses caused a bit of a funk, and to get out of them we needed to continue to work hard, wait for our opportunities, and trust in each other,” McAvoy said. “It paid off tonight- they came in with a positive attitude and everything clicked.”

The team is now 17-3 and play their next game on Friday, Jan. 20 against East River at home and continues to prepare for the playoffs.
