On Aug. 29, the Chess Club held its first meeting. During the meeting, president Antonio Pizza discussed plans for the year, including a possible tournament with Oviedo, as well as basic strategies for beginning chess players.

“I am excited to be continuing the club and the possibility of a tournament, getting to show people that chess is a sport,” Pizza said.

For the rest of the meeting, students broke into pairs to play chess. This gave each student a chance to learn how the game works and get a feel for their skills.

Meetings will be held after school from 2:30-3:30 each Monday in Coach Kohn’s room, 4-113. Although the club is set to end at 3:30 games can continue on until 4:00. There is a chance that meetings will change to Fridays later in the year. Chess Club is free for anyone to join.
