Released March 11 on Disney+, “Turning Red” follows Meilin as she fights her emotions to avoid turning into a huge red panda. This film attracted a lot of negative attention from its viewers but is truly an entertaining movie for all children.

Pixar

Most famously known for her role in “Grey’s Anatomy” as Cristina Yang, Sandra Oh stars as Meilin’s (Rosalie Chiang) mom, Ming, in “Turning Red.” Even for someone that is not a huge Disney fan, “Turning Red” is a good family-friendly movie.

Released March 11 on Disney+, “Turning Red” follows Meilin as she fights her emotions to avoid turning into a huge red panda. While dealing with her overbearing mother and trying to please her all at the same time, Meilin struggles to contain her emotions. To the audience, Ming is seen as a helicopter parent who publicly humiliates her daughter and tries her hardest to control every aspect of her life.

This film has attracted a lot of negativity towards its content. Some critics argue that the directors should not talk about periods in a children’s movie, even though Meilin is 13. Critics also say that Meilin’s red panda is like Marvel’s Hulk in the sense that Meilin becomes a red panda when her emotions get the best of her. A short, two minute clip talking about periods or a red panda being related to the Hulk should be the least of everyone’s worries.

However, this movie shows good aspects of Asian culture and adds to the diversity of Pixar’s movies. The drama of the storyline in this film keeps the audience entertained until the end, where events get a little cheesy.

Controversy aside,“Turning Red” has a good storyline, animation quality, and casting, and it should be added to your watchlist.
